A first neurological physiotherapy appointment should clarify your needs, assess relevant activities safely and agree an initial plan. Ask how goals, baseline function and progress reviews will be documented.
An intake evaluation is more useful when you arrive with a concrete concern, such as getting out of bed, walking to the bathroom or returning to a daily activity. You do not need to diagnose the problem first. Describe what happens and what help you need, then ask how the assessment will guide care.
What to prepare before the first visit
Ask our NeuroFicio team what referral or clinical information is needed before your assessment and how to share it appropriately. Relevant reports, precautions and current medicines help put your care needs in context. Please leave detailed records out of your first enquiry.
For a home visit, describe access and the assistance already available. For a video appointment, confirm the camera setup, available space and whether a caregiver should attend. A remote format may not be suitable for every assessment.
What happens during a neuro rehab intake evaluation?
The content depends on the diagnosis, clinical needs and service. A physiotherapist may discuss your history and goals and observe relevant movement or daily tasks. Ask what each part is assessing and tell the clinician if something is painful, tiring or worrying.
You should not be asked to attempt a task without appropriate support just to show your current limit. If another discipline or medical review is needed, ask how this will be arranged. No single intake template establishes that every neurological need has been assessed.

Questions to ask a neuro physical therapist at the first visit
Choose the questions that matter most and keep the answers with your care plan. Physical therapy and physiotherapy are internationally used names for the profession.
- What do you think is limiting the activity I care about?
- Which goals are realistic to work on now?
- What should I practise, and what should I avoid?
- How much assistance or equipment is needed?
- How often will we review the plan?
- How do I contact the team about changes between visits?
- What fees and cancellation terms apply?
How do I know if neuro physical therapy is working?
Ask the therapist to explain the agreed baseline and how progress will be compared with it. A useful outcome may be completing a task with less help, tolerating an agreed activity better or learning an effective adaptation. Maintaining function can also be an explicit goal where clinically appropriate.
A pleasant session or a higher exercise count alone does not explain whether your priority is improving. Ask the therapist to connect assessments with daily function and to review the plan when the expected change is not happening. Do not perform unsupervised timed walking or balance tests to score yourself.
What to ask about the rehabilitation timeline
Ask what can be estimated now, what remains uncertain and when the next decision will be made. After stroke or brain injury, the plan should not promise a universal recovery date. Later reassessment may still be worthwhile when there is a clear goal.
At the review, discuss progress, safety, effort and cost together. Ask what would justify continuing, changing the approach or referring to another service. NeuroFicio enquiries can establish available assessment formats and ongoing fees before you book.
Frequently asked questions
What if I am nervous about the first assessment?
Tell the clinician and ask them to explain each activity, its purpose and the support provided. You can raise concerns or ask for a pause.
Is physiotherapy working only if I fully recover?
No. Goals can include useful functional improvement, adaptation or maintaining abilities where appropriate. The team should explain the intended outcome and review it.
